Master Pastinha

Vicente Ferreira Pastinha, more known as Master Pastinha, he is part of the popular culture of Brazil. He was born in Salvador (BA) in day 5 of April of 1889, he was seen as “on individual distrustful and prevented, that when coming close itself to a corner, it soon took the way of the street”. Other peculiar characteristic it were attributed, as the pants of wide mouth that covered all extension of the feet, the little earring made of gold in the ear and the traditional one band hat.
After he was very old, he played Capoeira as a yoyng of little age, axecuting all the movements with great easiness. This fact and his intense devotion to the ‘Capoeira' made himself the famous and respected figure that always was, inside and outside of the ‘wheels' (roda de Capoeira). But who thought Pastinha the art of the ‘Capoeira' that exerted with as such perfection ? About this question, controversies exist. In the preface of a small published book in 1964, with the heading of ‘Capoeira Angola' and authorship of Pastinha, José Benetido Colmenro, affirms that he had a black master of Angola called Benedito. Between majority of the ‘capoeiristas', however, the accepted version is of that its master is Aberrê. In 1941, the first one to walk of a storehouse of the Largo do Pelourinho, together with Master Amorzinho, Pastinha established that one that would be one of the most famous academies of Capoeira of Angola. On Thursday and Sundays the animation infected the participants, the players of Capoeira or present public. Any tourist who passed in Capital of Bahia did not lose the chance to see the Master, in the center of ‘roda', playing with young and vigorous ‘capoeiras', defeating one by one. When he left the game, without needing to rest, he held a ‘berimbau' and it pulled all the songs (ballads). “Here I practise true Capoeira of Angola and the men learn here to be loyal and just. The law of Angola, that I inherited of my grandparents, is the law of loyalty”. (Pastinha when he tlaked to his friend Jorge Amado).

Berimbau, pandeiro, caxixi and agogô were used as musical instruments in the Capoeira of Pastinha that gave preference ot hte touches of São Bento Grande, São Bento Pequeno, Angola, Santa Maria, Cavalaria, Amazonas and Iuna.

One of the few capoeiristas of his time to travel for the exterior, in April of 1966, Pastinha integrated the Brazilian delegation to the Premier Festival International de Arts Nègres (First International Festival of Black Arts), Dakar (Senegal, Africa), the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil.

Beyond Master of Capoeira, Pastinha was also painter of oil paintings and still dedicated part of its time to direct the Sporting Center of Capoeira Angola, destined to preserve the game in its pure form, called Angola or Traditional.

Althought to be one of the great celebrities of the Bahia, Pastinha in the end of his life, he arrived to be poured of where his lived. In 1979, he had a cerebral spill, after that, he was for shelter D. Peter II. He died in 13 od november of 1981, he was 92 years of age. He left everything as inheritance what he constructed douring the life: magical universe and the beauty of the Capoeira of Angola.
