Vicente Ferreira Pastinha, more known as Master Pastinha, he is part of the popular culture of Brazil. He was born in Salvador (BA) in day 5 of April of 1889, he was seen as “on individual distrustful and prevented, that when coming close itself to a corner, it soon took the way of the street”. Other peculiar characteristic it were attributed, as the pants of wide mouth that covered all extension of the feet, the little earring made of gold in the ear and the traditional one band hat.
After he was very old, he played Capoeira as a yoyng of little age, axecuting all the movements with great easiness. This fact and his intense devotion to the ‘Capoeira' made himself the famous and respected figure that always was, inside and outside of the ‘wheels' (roda de Capoeira). But who thought Pastinha the art of the ‘Capoeira' that exerted with as such perfection ? About this question, controversies exist. In the preface of a small published book in 1964, with the heading of ‘Capoeira Angola' and authorship of Pastinha, José Benetido Colmenro, affirms that he had a black master of Angola called Benedito. Between majority of the ‘capoeiristas', however, the accepted version is of that its master is Aberrê. In 1941, the first one to walk of a storehouse of the Largo do Pelourinho, together with Master Amorzinho, Pastinha established that one that would be one of the most famous academies of Capoeira of Angola. On Thursday and Sundays the animation infected the participants, the players of Capoeira or present public. Any tourist who passed in Capital of Bahia did not lose the chance to see the Master, in the center of ‘roda', playing with young and vigorous ‘capoeiras', defeating one by one. When he left the game, without needing to rest, he held a ‘berimbau' and it pulled all the songs (ballads). “Here I practise true Capoeira of Angola and the men learn here to be loyal and just. The law of Angola, that I inherited of my grandparents, is the law of loyalty”. (Pastinha when he tlaked to his friend Jorge Amado). |
